It seems that Ivan Calderon has chosen to defend his WBO Junior Flyweight Championship despite having a major setback in the second round. He was knocked down but it seems that he is not out yet. It remains to be seen whether he will have the stamina and fitness to successfully defend his title but judging by what happened in the second round, the chances are not very good. The action will take place in New York and I am sure that some journalists will be prepared to take it to the young man if he fails to live up to the promise that he gave when he won the WBO title. He will be fighting against Jesus Iribe and should be prepared for a challenging match that might end up worse that his second round jousts.
At thirty five years, Calderon is at thirty zero one and has six Kos. He managed to get the unanimous decision partly due to the speed and movement that he used to subdue his less agile opponent. This was despite being sent down south in the second round. Experience also had a role to play because he did not lose focus on the match or waver in his determination to claim the prize. All three judges decided that Calderon was the winner with a one hundred and eighteen score to a one hundred and nine score for his opponent. A third closer came out at one hundred and sixteen points to the opponent’s one hundred and eleven points.
It seems that the decision was popular with fans that believed in Calderon even when he was down and seemingly out. The way that he put his act together showed that he had done his home work and was prepared to execute it at the crucial points in the match. It would have been unfortunate it if the knock down had been the sole determining factor when there was plenty of boxing for the public to enjoy in the contest. The final result was fair and it gave him a boost for the final.
